Home Ownership: The Number One Way to Build Wealth

Why home ownership is still the first door to wealth in America, the myths keeping people renting, and the steps to start now.
John Hope Bryant on Money and Wealth: Home Ownership: The Number One Way to Build Wealth

Turn on the television and you will find plenty of successful people telling young folks that buying a home is a waste of money. Look a little closer at those same voices and you will find that nearly every one of them owns a home. That irony is where this episode begins, and it is why I felt I had to set the record straight.

Renting is a fine stair step, but it was never meant to be the destination. Home ownership remains the primary way working families in America build wealth, and our tax system is designed to reward it. I share the story of a small Los Angeles townhouse I held onto through the 2008 crisis while well-meaning friends begged me to sell. Fear tells you to sell on the dip. Patience lets you be standing when the market comes back.

We also walk through history most of us never got in school: forty acres and a mule, the Homestead Act, redlining, the GI Bill, and the Freedman’s Bank that Frederick Douglass once led. I don’t tell that story so anyone can carry a grievance. I tell it so we understand the gap and then get busy closing it with a plan.

Then we get practical. I bust five myths, from needing twenty percent down to making too little to qualify, and lay out the steps from knowing your credit score to securing a true pre-approval letter instead of a prequalification. Home ownership is dignity, and it is yours to claim. Don’t say one day. Say day one.
