Hunters, Skinners, and Cooks: The Hidden Architecture of Wealth

The Hunter, the Skinner, and the Cook: a masterclass on the three roles behind every family, business, and community that builds lasting wealth.
John Hope Bryant on Money and Wealth: Hunters, Skinners, and Cooks: The Hidden Architecture of Wealth

Every family that builds something lasting has three people at the table, even when one person has to play every part. In this solo masterclass I name them the Hunter, the Skinner, and the Cook. The Hunter goes out and secures the bag. The Skinner protects it, counts it, and makes sure it lasts. The Cook turns vision and resources into something real and excellent that people can trust.

Most of us were never taught this framework. We were taught to hustle and taught to dream, and out of love our families passed down whatever habits they had, the good along with the costly. So I open this episode by breaking a few eggs: the difference between being broke and being poor, why money itself is not evil, and why you cannot out-earn bad relationships. Some of it is blunt, because I love you enough to tell you the truth.

From there we get practical. We talk about givers and takers, about the constructive friction that shows up when a Hunter and a Skinner share a house or a business, and about why the civil rights movement needed Ambassador Andrew Young as surely as it needed Dr. King. I also share how one working family in California built lasting wealth with a simple structure, one paycheck covering the bills while the other went to work as an investment.

Listen with a notebook, and better yet, listen with the people you build with, whether that is your spouse, your business partner, or the brothers at the barbershop. Then sit with the question I leave you with at the end: who is hunting in your life, who is skinning, who is cooking, and which role are you actually playing? Wealth is not luck. It is structure, character, and discipline repeated over time.
