Creating Generational Wealth

Derek bought a share of Nike instead of the shoes. Practical strategies to move your family from customer to owner, starting now.
Creating Generational Wealth, a Money and Wealth episode with John Hope Bryant

A young man named Derek came out of one of our Operation HOPE financial literacy classes in Detroit wearing a suit, and his friends clowned him for it. We handed him enough money to make a decision about Nike, and they told him to go buy some Air Jordans. Derek bought a share of Nike stock instead. His answer to his friends is the whole episode in one sentence: go ahead and buy the shoes, because every time you do, you are making me money.

Derek understood something most of us were never taught. You can be a customer, or you can be an owner. This episode lays out practical ways to move your family from the first group to the second, even if nobody handed you a thing.

I start with children and the quiet power of a small monthly investment started early and left alone to compound. Then I turn to working families and a disciplined real estate play: buy the worst house on the best block, hold it, protect it with a will and life insurance, and let equity do its work. Finally I talk to the strivers about what I call the silver tsunami, a wave of profitable businesses owned by retiring baby boomers whose children do not want to run them.

None of this requires a trust fund. It requires financial literacy, good credit, patience and a plan. When you know better, you do better. Money is freedom, and generational wealth is freedom you get to pass on.
