“John, what’s equity?” A young woman asked me that once when it was just the two of us standing together, and she almost apologized for asking. I was proud of her. She wanted to be the first investor in her family, and she had the courage to say out loud what most people are too embarrassed to admit they don’t know.
This episode is my answer to her, and to you. We start with plain definitions: equity, stocks, assets, and liabilities. Some of the assets I name will surprise you. Your family is one. Your education is one, and it is the ultimate poverty eradication tool. Your clothes and your jewelry are something else entirely, no matter how good they look on you.
Then we get into good debt and bad debt. Good debt is tied to something that can grow in value, like a home, a business, or an education with a real career path attached. Bad debt finances things that lose value the minute you walk away with them. People are financing game tickets and vacations and paying on them for years. Stop asking what the monthly payment is. Ask what the whole thing costs. I also break down when leasing a car makes sense and why I chose to buy instead.
We close with a listener question about discharging debt and what bankruptcy really does to your credibility, which is where the word credit comes from. No one gave you this memo, and that is not your fault. You’re not dumb and you’re not stupid. Let’s make smart sexy again.
