Bishop T.D. Jakes said something to me a couple of years ago that I have never been able to shake. We had been talking about the need to make smart sexy again, and he suggested we go one step further and make boring sexy again. He was right, and this episode is my attempt to honor that idea.
There was a time in our communities when a budget, a savings account, an insurance policy and a deed with your name on it were things to be proud of. Somewhere along the way the culture started rewarding the look of wealth over the substance of it, and social media turned up the volume on the flash. Real wealth tends to live quietly. It sleeps at night inside a budget and grows in accounts nobody posts about.
I lay out eight basics that I believe every family can build on: a budget, an emergency fund, life insurance, a will, a strong credit score, owning a home, investing in the stock market and teaching your children about money. You will not see any of these trending online, and every one of them will outlast a designer bag. Along the way I share a simple gift idea that can turn a child’s birthday into a first lesson in ownership, plus five things you can start on this week.
This one is for new families getting started and for older families ready for a reset. Grab a notebook, invite your partner or your crew, and have a real conversation about the fundamentals. I want the next generation to inherit our wisdom and not only our struggle, and wisdom usually looks pretty ordinary up close.
