The State of Ohio was petitioned for national statehood in 1801 when the state had 40,000 residents. By 1802 statehood was a reality, with residents rejecting any allowance for slavery. The bad news — it was never ratified by Congress and so from 1802 through the 1950’s Ohio was not “technically” a state. Congressman George Binder resolved this in the late 1950’s in a special session of Congress.
