A little boy in a store asks his mom why she doesn’t just use her credit card to buy the toy he wants. She tells him there’s no room left on any of her cards. That clip went around the internet, and I saw a missed teachable moment in it: a chance to sit down together, open the statements, and show a smart child that a credit card is not cash.
That’s where this episode starts. Then we move into something I’ve wanted to explain for a long time. A very successful friend of mine recently came close to a serious mistake by mixing his for-profit and nonprofit activities. Good intentions don’t protect you there. That conversation made me realize how few people were ever taught how business structures actually work.
So get out your pen and paper. I walk through the six kinds of entities: sole proprietorships, partnerships, C corporations, S corporations, limited liability companies, and nonprofits. You’ll learn what a general partner is, what limited liability really limits, and why a corporation is treated as its own person under the law. I’ll tell you which structure is my favorite and why I once had hundreds of them for a single business. I’ll also explain why a nonprofit belongs to the public, and why that raises the bar for anyone who runs one.
We close with a listener named Mike who asked how to get past the fear of failure and the fear of success. Courage is nothing more than your faith reaching through your fear. Asking the question is already the first step.
