The word credit traces back to a Latin root meaning to believe. Your credit score, then, is a measure of how much the financial world believes in you, and banking has always been a trust business. Growing up, I learned that the difference between a hustler and a businessperson is paperwork, and a credit report is some of the most important paperwork you will ever keep.

This episode makes a bold claim: a 700 credit score may matter as much to your future as a four-year degree. Below that line, you pay the highest price for money and get the least access to it. Above it, a loan application submitted at midnight meets a system that doesn’t know your race or your gender. It only knows whether you meet the criteria, and that is liberating.

Then I open the HOPE Financial Wellness Index and take you city by city, from St. Louis to Detroit to Oakland, comparing neighborhoods only a few miles apart. Income, home ownership, safety, graduation rates, even life expectancy all move with credit scores. I asked my team not to brief me ahead of time, so you hear me meet the data as you do. As my friend Mellody Hobson says, math doesn’t have an opinion.

You will also hear practical steps on the road to 700 and the story of a Delta employee whose HOPE coach helped him become a homeowner. Raise credit scores a hundred points in a neighborhood and the whole reality there starts to shift. When you rise, your community rises with you.
