Everyone sees the ribbon cuttings and the big announcements. Very few people ever see the engine room that keeps a mission alive year after year. For this episode I brought that engine room to the microphone in the person of Brian Betts, President and Chief Financial Officer of Operation HOPE.
Brian came up through public accounting and years in corporate finance before he found his people in the nonprofit world. Early in our talk he says something I want every founder to hear: a nonprofit is still a business, and you have to run it like one if you want to keep helping people for the long haul. From there he explains what a CFO actually does, how accounting looks back while finance looks ahead, and why an independent audit is really about trust.
Some of my favorite moments are plain-language lessons. Brian breaks down a balance sheet in about three minutes: what you own, what you owe, and what is left over. He explains cash versus accrual income, how in-kind gifts like donated office space inside bank branches show up on the books, and why he treats vendors as partners rather than line items. Relationship capital runs through all of it.
Every entrepreneur with their hair on fire needs someone like Brian in the room, a partner who names the risk and then helps find the right way forward. That partnership is a big reason Operation HOPE has earned Charity Navigator’s four-star rating year after year. If you run a business, a ministry or a nonprofit, keep a notepad close for this one.
