Every so often a founder says out loud what most of us carry in private. @whoismandachi did that in the video above, and I could not stop thinking about it. I want to add three things to what he said.
First, the person writing the check carries something the person cashing it never sees: almost 1,000 employees, a $2 million payroll every two weeks, and nobody to call at 2 AM. I know that seat. When the banker called to say Operation HOPE’s line of credit would not be honored, I broke one of my own certificates of deposit to make payroll. For much of our history I was not on payroll myself.
Second, more risk means more reward. My name is on the grant requests, the anti-fraud statements, the insurance liability and the debt. Do not hate on somebody because they took a risk and it worked out. For every company that made it, I can name twenty that blew up, and the shareholders of Sears, Kmart, Circuit City, Blockbuster and Enron can tell you what that costs.
Third, applaud the ones who carry the building. Most people work a job, leave at 5 and go home to their families, and that is how society is structured. But when a good capitalist works eighteen hours a day for twenty years and creates jobs and opportunity, do not be jealous and do not talk down to them. We need them to succeed.
If you are carrying that weight right now, you do not have to carry it alone. Operation HOPE offers financial coaching at no cost, and the conversation continues in my national bestseller Capitalism for All and on the Money & Wealth podcast, with new episodes every Thursday on the Black Effect Podcast Network and iHeartRadio.
