Why Mindset Is Money & Wealth

Bravado isn't confidence. John Hope Bryant on humility, listening and the quiet mindset that builds lasting wealth.
A path along a mountain ridge

God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. Quincy Jones reminded me of that more than once, and it sits at the center of this episode, which I never planned to record. A few conversations in my comment section this season stirred something in me, and I realized we had to pour the foundation again before we talk about buying homes and building companies.

When I was coming up, I chased Ambassador Andrew Young for ten years, buying plane tickets just to hear him speak and hoping for a moment of his attention. When I finally sat with him, and later with Quincy, I mostly listened for hours. That habit of listening built more for me than any talent I brought into the room. Too many gifted young people are confusing bravado with confidence, loudness with strength, and intelligence with wisdom.

Real confidence is quieter. It looks like paying your vendors on time, owning something that rises in value, a 700 credit score, a savings cushion and a small amount invested every month. I tell you about a family I’ve known for thirty years who own one of the finest hotels in Los Angeles. You would recognize the celebrities walking through their lobby, and you have never heard their name. The guests rent the room. The family owns it.

I say all this because I’m rooting for this generation, and I care enough to tell you the truth. Audit your money, your time and the people around you. Find a mentor and earn their investment by showing up and listening. Build the infrastructure of success instead of its appearance, because real success whispers.
