Wemimo Abbey came to America from Lagos, Nigeria, as a teenager and watched his mother get turned down for credit because she had no history in this country. He did not forget it. Years later he co-founded Esusu, a company that reports rent payments to the credit bureaus so that people who pay on time every month finally get credit for it.

Today Esusu is valued at over a billion dollars, and millions of renters have a credit score because of it. That is an Up From Nothing story if I have ever heard one.

Wemimo and I talk about the immigrant hustle, the moment he realized the credit system was broken by design, how he raised money when nobody in the room looked like him, and what he tells young founders who want to build something that matters and makes money at the same time.
