There are moments that stop you in your tracks — not because of the award itself, but because of who is doing the honoring.

Black Enterprise has been a cornerstone of Black economic life in America for over 50 years. Founded by Earl G. Graves Sr. in 1970, it arrived at a time when Black business leadership was largely invisible in mainstream media, and made a declaration: we see you, we celebrate you, and we will hold the standard high. Decade after decade, Black Enterprise has done exactly that — chronicling the builders, the disruptors, the trailblazers, and the everyday entrepreneurs who are quietly changing the world.
The XCEL Summit for Men is a reflection of that mission in its most powerful, living form. This past October in Orlando, I had the privilege of standing in a room full of Black men who are leading businesses, raising families, building communities, and refusing to accept a ceiling. The energy was electric. The conversations were real. The commitment in that room was undeniable.

To be recognized in that space — alongside changemakers, CEOs, and voices of a generation — is something I do not take lightly. I said it at the summit and I’ll say it here: I consider myself an economic plumber. My job is to build the infrastructure — the pipes, the pathways, the access points — so that prosperity can flow to every community that has been shut out of it. Being honored by Black Enterprise affirms that the work is being seen, and more importantly, that it matters.

To Earl “Butch” Graves Jr. and the entire Black Enterprise family — thank you. Not just for this recognition, but for 55 years of bearing witness to Black excellence and demanding more of it. You have always been a mirror that reflects our best selves back to us. You are continuing that proud, distinguished legacy of Mr. Earl Graves Sr. It is a privilege to be part of that legacy.

The work continues.
