The Answer to DEI Is Beyoncé, a Money and Wealth episode with John Hope Bryant

Beyoncé did not ask country music for permission. She walked into a genre that was never built with her in mind, made the best record in the room, and came home with Album of the Year. When I watched that happen, I saw the clearest answer I know to the argument our country keeps having about diversity, equity and inclusion.

For years I have described DEI as research and development for new markets, the place where companies and communities cultivate their future. That idea has been weaponized and politicized, so in this episode I set the label aside and talk about what I call inclusive economics. It is about participation, not politics. Who gets the contracts? Who sits on the supply chain? Who is building ownership because a company chose to invest in the neighborhoods it serves? Inclusion that shows up as business is the kind that lasts.

Beyoncé is my framework, but she has plenty of company. I walk through a roll call of people who became undeniable in rooms that expected nothing from them: Oprah Winfrey building a national platform on her own terms, Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters changing who plays and who watches, Reginald Lewis buying a global company on Wall Street, Ursula Burns leading Xerox, and Dr. Patricia Bath earning a patent that changed eye surgery. Each of them turned excellence into economic opportunity for the people coming behind them.

None of this is about asking for a seat at the table. It is about building the table, owning the building, and getting ready for an economy that artificial intelligence is about to reshape. Excellence is the new activism, and ownership is the new protest. Share this one with somebody who is tired of waiting for permission.
