The Six Layers: From Fake Rich to Real Generational Wealth

From rented jets to family offices: the six layers between looking rich and building wealth that lasts for generations.
The Six Layers: From Fake Rich to Real Generational Wealth, a Money and Wealth episode with John Hope Bryant

In my twenties I drove a Mustang with a car phone cord that led to nowhere. I bought the handset and the antenna at RadioShack and bolted them on because I wanted to look like somebody. So when I talk about fake rich, I am not looking down on anybody. I have been there, and I want to help you get past it faster than I did.

This episode breaks wealth into six layers. The first is influencer and bling rich, the rented jet interiors and borrowed mansions built for the camera. Then comes transactional rich, the lucky break or the lottery win, followed by contract rich, the big paycheck that feels permanent until the career ends and the bills don’t. The first three have one thing in common. They run on labor and luck, and they tend to run out.

The last three are where real wealth lives. It starts with a liquidity event, when something you built or own is valued by the market and turns into cash you don’t blow. The next stage is living on new income while the principal stays untouched. The final layer is generational, when your money makes more money than your labor ever could, and a family office keeps the next generation from spending it down.

Along the way I explain why a team owner can pay his players out of what amounts to petty cash, why so many athletes and lottery winners end up broke within a few years, and the one move any couple can make right now: let one income pay for the life and the other income build it. You make money during the day. You build wealth in your sleep.
