How does a family fortune last seven generations? Greg Fleming, President and CEO of Rockefeller Capital Management, answers that question for a living, and he joined me to share what he has learned working alongside the Rockefeller family and many other American families who want their wealth to outlive them.
Greg is known on Wall Street as an operator’s operator. He spent years in senior leadership at Merrill Lynch, including as its president, and he teaches at Yale Law School. What moved me most, though, was his heart. He talks about the Rockefellers’ giving, from Spelman College, named for Laura Spelman Rockefeller, to Rockefeller University, and about why the belief that hard work can lift anyone is the bedrock of this country.
Then he gets practical. Generational wealth, Greg says, is intentional. The families who keep it have a long-term plan, stick with it through market noise, and stay away from anything promising to make them rich quickly. He explains what a family office actually does, why trusts and endowments protect the principal, and how his team helps professional athletes plan for the years after the big paychecks stop.
My friend Tony Ressler taught me that you make money during the day and build wealth in your sleep. This conversation shows what that looks like when it is done with discipline and generosity. Whether you are a first-generation earner or the first in your family to invest at all, the tools the wealthy use are closer than you think.
