My mother’s name was Juanita Murray Smith, and on August 6th, it went to work in a way I could never have imagined when I was a kid watching her rebuild her life from a kitchen table in South Central Los Angeles.
Here is the part of her story I don’t tell often, because I’ve spent most of my life telling the part that comes after it. My mother was a single mom, born in the deep South of Alabama, and raised in a modest home in East St. Louis, IL, by her mother, my grandmother, Ms. Vesta Murray. Coincidentally, her childhood home was literally painted the color silver, in East St. Louis.
She lost everything in a divorce — the kind of loss that could have been the end of the story for a lot of people, and very nearly is, for a lot of people. It was not the end of hers. She went and acquired the financial knowledge nobody had ever handed her, applied it with a discipline I am still in awe of, and built her way to owning multiple properties. She left this world a millionaire.
I want to be precise about what that sentence is actually describing, because it is easy to let it slide past as a nice ending. A single mother, starting over with nothing after a divorce, taught herself what banks and financial institutions were never in a hurry to teach a woman who looked like her, and did it so thoroughly that she died owning property and holding real wealth. That is not luck. That is the HOPE Doctrine on Wealth, lived out in one life, a decade before I ever put a name to the doctrine itself.
This past week, Operation HOPE launched Juanita — an AI-powered financial wellness coach, named after her, and built to do at scale what she once did for our family at that kitchen table.
Juanita is the first client-facing solution to come out of HOPE AI™, a partnership I’m proud to co-chair alongside my friend Van Jones, founder of Dream Machine. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, UNCF, 100 Black Men of America, and Shopify all stood behind this with us — a genuinely unusual coalition of some of the most trusted nonprofit names in the country, all agreeing that artificial intelligence should be pointed at expanding trust and access, not replacing it. Juanita is available now through the Operation HOPE client portal, and she is built to answer the question that has quietly undermined financial coaching for as long as I’ve been doing this work: what happens to the person who needs help at eleven at night, or on a Sunday, or before they’re ready to sit down face to face with a coach and admit how bad things have gotten? Our HOPE Inside, HOPE Financial Wellbeing Coaches remain exactly where they’ve always been — the heart of this work, for anyone who wants to go deeper than an app can take them. Juanita AI is there for the hours and the moments a human coach simply cannot physically cover alone.
I named her Juanita on purpose, and not as a tribute in the sentimental sense people sometimes mean that word. My mother was never interested in being memorialized. She was interested in results. So the honor I actually wanted to give her wasn’t a name on a plaque — it was a tool, doing her actual work, for people who need exactly what she once needed and had to build for herself out of nothing.
I think about how much faster her own life might have turned around with something like this in her pocket. Not a replacement for the discipline and grit that were entirely hers. Just a little less distance between the moment she needed an answer and the moment she got one.
She used to tell me it wasn’t what you made, it was what you kept and managed well, that mattered most. She said it constantly, plainly, as instruction rather than as something you’d stitch onto a pillow. Everything I’ve built in my career — Operation HOPE, every book, every framework I’ve ever put a name to — has really just been me trying to translate that kitchen-table wisdom into something that could reach further than her kitchen table ever could.
This week, that translation took its next form. A financial coach with her name on it, patient the way she was patient, direct the way she was direct, unimpressed by excuses and somehow still kind about it, doing the work at scale that she once did for one family, starting with me.
