The New Ownership Revolution

Millions of small businesses are about to change hands as baby boomers retire. Here is how to become the next owner instead of the next startup.
An "Open" sign on a shop door

Next time you walk into an office building, read the directory on the lobby wall. Behind many of those names is an owner in their sixties or seventies who is ready to retire, and whose children have no interest in running the family firm. Multiply that across America and you have one of the largest ownership openings of our lifetime.

This episode is about that opening. We tell young entrepreneurs to start from scratch and hope for the best. I love a startup, and I have launched plenty of them. There is another road, though, and it gets far less attention: buying a business that already has customers, cash flow, systems and a name people trust. Think of the neighborhood dental practice, the heating and air company, the funeral home, the auto body shop or the accounting firm down the street.

I walk through ten industries where these transitions are already happening, the ways people finance a purchase without having all the cash up front, from seller financing to SBA loans to community development lenders, and a plain-English method for putting a value on a small business before you make an offer. I also share why Operation HOPE is committing to train our clients in mergers and acquisitions, because this is financial literacy at the next level.

Silver rights have always been about moving from the streets to the suites, and ownership is how a family stops renting its future and starts holding a piece of it. If you have ever looked at a thriving shop in your neighborhood and wondered who owns it, this conversation is for you. Be a little nosy, because that owner may be waiting for someone like you to ask.
